What's In Your Sunscreen?

Most people know that they should apply sunscreen before swimming outside, but they don’t always know what they’re putting on their skin. Many common sunscreens protect them from getting burned but are loaded with chemicals that can hurt the environment and their bodies. Some of these sunscreens may be even more harmful when mixed with chlorine.

In a 2017 study published in Chemosphere, researchers reported that the combination of chlorine and ingredients such as Avobenzone and Oxybenzone, which are found in many chemical sunscreens, can lead to kidney and liver dysfunction and nervous system disorders. In some cases these chemicals have been reported to disrupt the body’s hormonal balance by blocking or mimicking estrogen and other hormones

According to a 2015 study published in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, these chemical sunscreens contribute to the destruction of our precious coral reefs, which provide oxygen for our planet.

What Should I Do?

Switch to a 100 percent mineral sunscreen because it’s made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are safe for your skin and our planet. You should also look for products that don’t have oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and octocrylene.

Remember:

  • Read the back of the bottle. Many chemical sunscreens claim they are chemical-free but hide the harsh active chemicals on the back.
  • Apply 30 minutes before entering the water and every two hours while in the sun.
  • Have fun!
