Hello Tony and Lisa Palmer here. Founders of TropicSport.
We are excited to share with you the news that yet another part of the U.S. has joined Hawaii in the movement to ban chemical sunscreens.
On February 5, 2019 the city of Key West passed an ordinance to ban two toxic chemical sunscreens ingredients, oxybenzone and octinoxate, which the research confirms harm the coral reefs. Our TropicSport team was in attendance to show support and be a part of the 6 to 1 historic landmark vote. The ban will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2021.
With more than an hour of public speakers, the Key West community came together to make their case to city officials. Scientists and others shared research showing the damaging effects of oxybenzone and octinoxate chemicals, which cause coral bleaching, coral death and reproductive diseases in fish. We were pleased to hear Commissioner Jimmy Weekley’s closing remarks, which said it all, "It's our obligation as leaders of this city to try to do what's best for all residents. There is no alternative for the reef, so I hope the commission will take the bold step that is necessary to move forward with this ordinance and hopefully other communities in the state, the county of Monroe, the state of Florida will pick up on this as well."
Mayor Teri Johnson also conveyed her support, “We have one reef, and we have to do one small thing to protect that. It’s our obligation.”
After much anticipation, the room erupted in cheers, applause and high fives when the roll-call vote confirmed that the ordinance passed.
You have told us that you love our sunscreen because it’s natural - made with non-nano zinc oxide and titanium oxide creating a physical not chemical barrier from the harmful rays of the sun. Also, our sunscreen does not contain toxic chemical ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene. We also know you love TropicSport because it lasts three times longer than most chemical sunscreens passing both the US FDA 80-minute water resistance test and the 240-minute Australian water resistance test.Chemical sunscreen companies mislead consumers by saying there are no alternatives for sun protection. That is simply not accurate. There are numerous mineral sunscreens available today, like TropicSport which is designed to protect you, your family and the planet.
We were shocked to learn that 90% of Florida’s reefs have vanished, in part due to the chemical sunscreens now banned in Key West. That is why we are committed to our mission of creating a sunscreen that is safe for our environment and your health. We are proud of the citizens and officials of Key West for taking this monumental step to help protect the coral reefs and marine life by banning toxic ingredients.
How can you help the movement? Help us get the word out to educate friends and family about the dangers of chemical sunscreens.
The more we can encourage and support communities like Key West and Hawaii that demand safe alternatives like TropicSport sunscreen, the better off our planet will be for us and our children. Thanks for believing in our products. We can’t do it without your continued support.
